What’s in a book title?

I have been doing a lot of research to name my “new and improved” version of my existing book “Useful Information for Everyday Living”.  I’ve had two different scenarios presented to me on how to name the book.  The first was to design the cover on a piece of paper and hand it to someone for 10 seconds then take it away and ask them what the book was about.  The second was to go into a local bookstore and have several titles and ask what people thought the title meant and if they would pick up and be interested in it.

What I did – I went into the local bookstore armed with two titles.  I approached one of the employees and she was gracious enough to take time with me on all of the book questions that I had.  Needless to say, I have a new title and a lot more information too!  She told me information that I had not even thought of.  Things like: Make sure to put the book title in the middle to bottom of the book because most stores will put their sticker (% off) in the top right hand corner.  If you put your title at the top, chances are that it will be partially covered up. And – if they stack the book under a separate shelf on a table, the title will be lost under the shelf.  We also discussed colors that are “eye-catching” and what to put on the spine of the book.  What great information! <Thank you Linda!>

I hope to have the new book out in the next month or so.  Will keep you posted!
